Is this industry at the critical mass in terms of sales volumes yet? The point at which the recordable blank bluray media really takes off and sales start to really take off.... well as I write (February 2010) - No not just yet. The retail prices of 25GB blank blu-ray recordable disks are still a little too high, some manufacturers such as Ritek are shipping recordable bluray at around the $1.5 mark, so perhaps £1 into distributors, but the uk market price amoungst website retailers (the main channel for the blank disk media market) is currently holding steady at around the $2 or £1.30 mark. A great deal of the household name brands such as Sony, Verbatim and Maxell are at a much higher premium price having received stocks at prices in Q3 and Quarter 4 in late 2009 with website retail prices in the region of £3-£4 per blank bluray disk and high street prices easily double that which can be found at the major web players in the sector. A great deal of the industry experts predict blu-ray will unleash a new dimension of high powered gaming possibilities but the price is still prohibative. The ongoing demand for more and more dynamic and comprehensive content is stronger than ever and its only a question of a string of the 'must have' titles turning to blu-ray that will launch this sector of the market into an vertical sales growth. The supply problems will come in the latter part of 2010 when the demand will out-strip supply and in turn force the stabilisation of the wholesale and distribution prices - now its up to the blank bluray disk factories to turn over more of their lines from Dvd-r assembly to the up-to-the-minute format. Lets take a glance at the lifecycle of the DVD blank disc then it should be logical to assume the same pattern will be taken although it is complex to predict the speed this will take place over the next two or three of years. There are a large number of forces fighting here over the bluray format, as far as Hollywood is nervous they see this as another opportunity to stamp out piracy that has wrecked the DVD film industry, keeping retail prices high for the blank blu-ray recordable media means crooks will not be interested in manufacturing copied bluray in the near future. Recording and burning equipment now is becoming more affordable and the blu-ray burners, roms and discs retail prices during 2010 should see very steep drops and volumes actually starting to move - in spite of this it is the installed base of blu-ray players that is halting the true expansion of the format at this time. The Sony PS3 is in effect a bluray player and for a considerable section of the uk market the most important contributory reason in purchasing the unit has been the capacity to playback blu-ray films. When we reach a stage where all PC's are shipped as standard with bluray blank disc recorders and home DVD players replaced with blu-ray players the market will mature, that though is conceivably still 2 or three years down the line, it may be a year or so from now that the man in the street truly have his or her eyes opened to the actual benefits in terms of quality blu-ray provides them, its just the price points that then relate directly to the volumes of players that ship - with any luck Christmas 2010 will see the blu-ray player and a handful of blank blu-ray discs as everybodies number 1 requested item.
